At Gracie Barra Agoura, maintaining a clean, professional, and respectful environment is mandatory. The academy enforces the global “Red Shield” standards to ensure that all students can train safely without the risk of skin infections or injury.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the hygiene and etiquette rules.

  1. Hygiene Standards (Non-Negotiable)

Because BJJ is a contact sport, hygiene is critical.

The Gi (Uniform): You must wear a clean official Gracie Barra Gi for every class. It must be washed after every use to prevent odors and bacteria.

 Personal Grooming:

Nails: Fingernails and toenails must be trimmed short to prevent scratching training partners.

Shower: Students should shower before class if they have been working all day, and immediately after class to prevent ringworm or staph.

Hair: Long hair must be tied back.

 Footwear Policy:

No Shoes on the Mats: Street shoes carry germs and are strictly forbidden on the training surface.

No Bare Feet Off the Mats: You must wear flip-flops or slides when walking from the mat to the restroom or locker room.

  1. Dojo Etiquette (Respect)

The Bow: Upon entering and leaving the mat area, students bow to the center (often towards the picture of Master Carlos Gracie Jr.). This signifies respect for the space and the lineage.

Lining Up: At the start and end of class, students line up by rank (Black Belts to White Belts). You must stand still and attentive.

Addressing Instructors: Instructors are addressed as “Professor” (Black Belts) or “Coach”.

Punctuality: Arriving late is considered disrespectful. If you are late, wait at the edge of the mat for permission to enter.

  1. Training Etiquette

Ego Check: Aggression and “spazzing” are discouraged. Higher belts are there to help you learn, not to beat you up. Treating partners with care is mandatory.

The Tap: Respect the tap immediately. If your partner taps, you release the hold instantly.
