Gracie Barra Agoura: Fundamentals of BJJ
Gracie Barra Agoura offers a comprehensive and structured program focused on the Fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) , designed specifically for new students of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds.
The academy, located at 5883 Kanan Rd, Suites 16 & 17, Agoura Hills, CA 91301 , utilizes the global Gracie Barra system to ensure a safe, systematic, and welcoming introduction to the martial art.
- The Fundamentals Program (GB1)
The cornerstone of the beginner experience at Gracie Barra Agoura is the GB1 (Fundamentals Program) . This program is mandatory for new adult students before they progress to the advanced tiers (GB2/GB3).
Purpose: To build a strong, safe technical foundation and introduce the core philosophy and self-defense aspects of BJJ.
Curriculum Structure: The program operates on a 16-week rotating cycle (covering 96 core techniques). This means a student can join at any point in the year and still receive a complete, comprehensive education in the basics, as every technique is covered systematically.
Core Techniques Taught:
Self-Defense: Fundamental techniques like breakfalls (how to fall safely), technical stand-ups (how to safely get up from the ground), and escapes from common street grabs and chokes.
Positional Hierarchy: Mastering the most important grappling positions: the Guard, Mount, Side Control, and Back Control.
Basic Submissions: Introduction to high-percentage submissions like the Armbar and Triangle Choke , taught with a focus on technique over speed.
No Sparring Requirement: Crucially, the GB1 program does not immediately require live sparring (“rolling”) . Students learn techniques in a fully cooperative environment to build muscle memory and confidence before testing their skills against resistance.
- The Beginner Environment and Philosophy
The atmosphere is carefully managed to encourage nervous newcomers.
World-Class Leadership: The school is led by BJJ Hall of Famer Professor Romulo Barral (10-time World Champion). His involvement ensures the Fundamentals instruction is precise, detailed, and technically sound.
Safety and Support: The class is structured to prioritize safety, making it accessible to those who are not currently in shape. Fitness is developed through the BJJ training itself.
Community Focus: The philosophy of “Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone” fosters a supportive, “family-like atmosphere” where ego is discouraged. Beginners are often paired with more experienced, higher-ranked students (who are trained to be patient mentors) to help them drill the techniques.
- Logistics for New Students
What to Wear: For the first class, students should wear comfortable athletic clothing (T-shirt and shorts/sweatpants with no zippers or pockets). Gracie Barra typically provides a loaner Gi (uniform) for the introductory class.
Schedule: Fundamentals classes are offered throughout the day on weekdays (typically 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM) and on Saturday mornings (e.g., 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM).
Trial Class: Gracie Barra Agoura usually offers a free trial class , allowing new students to experience the structured teaching method and facility firsthand before making any commitment.
The Fundamentals Program at Gracie Barra Agoura provides the most professional, safest, and most systematic entry point into the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
