Gracie Barra Agoura: BJJ Competition Team

Gracie Barra Agoura operates under the umbrella of the global Gracie Barra organization, which maintains a highly active and structured   BJJ Competition Team   presence worldwide, known as   CompNet  .

While Gracie Barra Agoura focuses heavily on its core programs (Fundamentals and Self-Defense), it supports a robust system for those students—adults and children—who wish to compete and test their skills.

The academy is located at   5883 Kanan Rd, Suites 16 & 17, Agoura Hills, CA 91301.

  1. The Competition Philosophy: Beyond the Win

At Gracie Barra Agoura, competition is viewed as a   tool for personal development   and skill refinement, rather than the sole purpose of training.

Focus:   The goal is to apply the techniques learned in the structured curriculum (GB1, GB2, GB3) against a fully resisting opponent under stress.

Skill Refinement:   Competition training sharpens reflexes, improves speed, and forces students to analyze their “game flow” (personal style) and correct their technical weaknesses.

Community Support:   Competitors, regardless of the outcome, are supported by the entire “GB Family,” reinforcing the values of perseverance and brotherhood.

  1. Competition Team Structure (CompNet)

Gracie Barra runs its own internal league,   CompNet  , which is highly active in California, offering a structured environment for competitors of all ranks.

What is CompNet?   This is Gracie Barra’s exclusive, internal competition circuit. It offers frequent, localized tournaments across California, providing a safe and organized setting for students to gain competitive experience.

Accessibility:   CompNet events cater to   all belt levels   (from white belt to black belt) and   all age groups   (kids, teens, adults, and masters).

The Competition Class:   Gracie Barra Agoura typically offers dedicated “Competition Classes” or advanced training sessions (GB2/GB3) focused on:

Strategic Principles:   Learning points systems, clock management, and controlling the pace of the match.

Intense Drilling:   High-volume, high-intensity drilling to simulate the pressure and fatigue of tournament matches.

Takedowns:   Focused work on standing grappling, including throws and takedowns (integrating Judo/Wrestling) crucial for starting the match aggressively.

  1. Expert Leadership and Coaching

The competition team benefits from coaching directly tied to an elite lineage.

Professor Romulo Barral:   As a BJJ Hall of Famer and multiple-time IBJJF and ADCC World Champion, Professor Barral provides an unparalleled level of strategic insight and technical knowledge to the competition team. His expertise is crucial for developing high-level competitors.

Examples of Competitive Lineage:   The Gracie Barra lineage has consistently produced top athletes, and the Agoura team benefits from the same highly technical coaching philosophy found in the larger Northridge/LA network.

  1. Logistics and Preparation

Gi Requirement:   For competition (and most classes), the   official Gracie Barra Gi   (uniform) and patches are required, adhering to the organization’s standardized rules.

Pre-Competition Training Plan:   CompNet often provides registered athletes with a   Six-Week Training Plan   that outlines the final preparation phase, ensuring athletes peak at the right time and focus on competition-specific drills.

Tournament Location:   CompNet tournaments for the California region are held at various locations, often centralized in Orange County (e.g., Santiago Canyon College), making them accessible for the Agoura community.

Joining the competition team at Gracie Barra Agoura is an excellent pathway for any BJJ student, regardless of ambition, to accelerate their technical growth, improve mental toughness, and gain confidence by testing their skills under pressure.
