The GB1 Fundamentals Program is the introductory curriculum for adults at Gracie Barra Agoura. It is designed to teach the essential building blocks of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in a safe, structured, and logical manner.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the GB1 curriculum.

  1. The Structure: A 16-Week Cycle

The GB1 program is not random; it follows a 16-week rotating cycle.

Why it works: Each week focuses on a specific position or theme (e.g., Week 1: Mount Escapes & Self-Defense). This ensures that every student, regardless of when they join, will eventually cover all 96 core techniques.

Linear Progression: Students learn to connect movements. For example, you learn how to take someone down, how to pass their guard, and how to submit them, all within a cohesive system.

  1. Core Components of GB1

 Self-Defense (The Roots)

Before learning sport techniques, students learn how to survive real-world aggression.

Techniques: Escaping headlocks, defending against punches, breaking bear hugs, and neutralizing a standing attacker.

Philosophy: “Manage the distance, manage the damage.”

 Ground Fundamentals

The bulk of the curriculum focuses on the ground game.

The Guard: Learning to fight off your back using your legs to control distance.

Mount & Side Control: How to hold a dominant position and how to escape if you are trapped underneath.

Submissions: Basic, high-percentage finishes like the Armbar, Triangle Choke, and Rear Naked Choke.

  1. The “No-Sparring” Philosophy

In GB1, safety is paramount.

Drilling vs. Rolling: Beginners do not engage in full-contact sparring (“rolling”) right away. Instead, they perform cooperative drills with a partner who offers little to no resistance. This allows the student to learn the mechanics without the stress of a fight.

Specific Training: As students progress, they are introduced to “positional sparring,” where they start in a specific position (like guard) with a limited goal (e.g., sweep or pass), reducing the risk of injury.

  1. Uniform & Culture

Red Shield: All students wear the official Gracie Barra Gi. This creates a professional, equal environment.

Etiquette: Classes begin and end with a bow. Respect for the instructor and training partners is mandatory.
