At Gracie Barra Agoura, selecting a Gi is straightforward because of the academy’s specific uniform policy. You don’t have to navigate hundreds of brands; you simply need to choose the right Gracie Barra model for your needs.

Here is the advice typically given by instructors like Prof. Jaeson and Prof. Zane to new students.

  1. The “Red Shield” Requirement

The most important rule: You must wear an official Gracie Barra Gi.

Why: It creates equality. On the mats, a CEO and a student look the same. It also ensures quality control and hygiene standards are met.

Colors: Only White and Blue Gis are allowed at GB Agoura. Black Gis are typically reserved for instructors or specific events.

  1. Selecting the Right Model (Fit & Function)

Gracie Barra offers different tiers of Gis, and instructors usually recommend based on your training frequency:

  1. The “GB1” Standard Gi

 Best For: Beginners.

Features: Lightweight, durable, and affordable. It is perfect for someone training 2–3 times a week. It dries quickly, which is a huge plus if you only own one Gi.

  1. The “Pro” Competition Gi

Best For: Competitors and those training 4+ times a week.

Features: Slightly heavier weave, more tailored fit. It is harder for opponents to grab (great for competition) but might feel stiffer initially.

  1. Sizing (The “A” System)

BJJ Gi sizing is unique (A0, A1, A2, etc.).

Advice: Don’t guess. Try it on at the academy pro shop. A Gi that fits out of the bag will shrink after the first wash. Instructors will help you size up slightly to account for shrinkage.

  1. Maintenance Tips

Wash Immediately: Never let a sweaty Gi sit overnight.

Hang Dry: To extend the life of the fabric and prevent excessive shrinking, hang dry your Gi instead of using a hot dryer.

Belt: Do not wash your belt (tradition says it washes away the knowledge), but do air it out in the sun to kill bacteria.
