The Adult Beginner BJJ Program at Gracie Barra Agoura, officially known as the GB1 Fundamentals Program, is the primary entry point for all new students. It is designed to introduce the core principles and techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, structured, and non-intimidating environment.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the GB1 program.

  1. The 16-Week Curriculum

The defining feature of GB1 is its structure. Unlike many gyms where instruction is random, GB1 follows a 16-week rotating cycle.

Content: The curriculum covers 96 essential techniques. Each week focuses on a specific position or theme (e.g., Week 1: Mount Escapes & Self-Defense; Week 2: Guard Passing).

Self-Defense Focus: A significant portion of the class is dedicated to standing self-defense (escaping headlocks, bear hugs, and defending strikes) before moving to ground techniques.

No Gaps: Because it rotates, you can join at any time. If you start on Week 10, you will cycle through until you hit Week 9 again, ensuring you see every technique.

  1. Safety First (No Sparring)

Gracie Barra prioritizes safety for beginners.

No Live Rolling: In the early stages of GB1, students do not engage in full-resistance sparring (“rolling”). This prevents injury and allows students to focus on learning mechanics without the panic of a fight.

Specific Training: Instead of rolling, students engage in “specific training” or positional drilling, where they start in a specific position (like guard) and work on a single objective against light resistance.

  1. The Class Structure

A typical 60-minute GB1 class follows this format:

Warm-up (10-15 mins): Calisthenics and mobility drills (shrimping, breakfalls) to prepare the body.

Self-Defense Technique: Learning how to handle a standing aggressor.

Ground Technique: Learning a core BJJ move (e.g., armbar from guard).

Drilling: Practicing the moves with a cooperative partner.

  1. Uniform & Culture

Red Shield Uniform: Students must wear the official Gracie Barra Gi. This fosters a sense of team unity and professionalism.

Etiquette: The environment is formal but friendly. Students bow onto the mats and address instructors as “Professor” or “Coach.” The culture is explicitly ego-free, with higher belts acting as mentors to beginners.
