The Anti-Bullying Program at Gracie Barra Agoura is an integral part of their Future Champions youth curriculum. Located in Agoura Hills, California, this academy (run by Hall of Fame Professor Romulo Barral and led by Professor Jaeson Bianchi) has developed a specialized approach to helping children deal with bullies without becoming bullies themselves.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the program.

  1. The Goal: “Bullyproof” Confidence

The primary defense against bullying isn’t physical; it’s psychological.

The “Bullyproof” Posture: Bullies target victims who appear weak or insecure. Through rigorous physical training, children at GB Agoura develop a confident posture—standing tall, making eye contact, and speaking clearly. This “non-victim” demeanor often prevents bullying before it starts.

Verbal De-escalation: The program teaches specific scripts. Kids learn to say, “Stop, leave me alone,” with authority. They practice using their voice as a weapon to draw attention and set boundaries.

  1. Non-Violent Self-Defense

If words fail and a physical altercation occurs, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu offers a unique solution.

No Punching: Unlike Karate or Kickboxing, GB Agoura does not teach children to punch or kick bullies. Striking a bully often results in the victim getting in trouble at school or escalating the violence.

 The “Control” Strategy:

Close the Distance: Kids learn to safely move past the bully’s punches.

Takedown: They learn to take the bully to the ground without slamming them.

Neutralization: Using leverage, they pin the bully to the ground (Mount or Side Control) and hold them there until help arrives. This neutralizes the threat without causing injury.

  1. Character Development

The program is built on the Gracie Barra Code of Conduct.

Respect: Kids must bow to instructors and treat training partners with care. They learn that their skills are a responsibility, not a tool for showing off.

Discipline: Classes are structured and formal. This builds impulse control and focus, traits that help children succeed in the classroom as well as on the mats.

  1. Age-Appropriate Learning

The anti-bullying curriculum is tailored by age group within the Future Champions program:

Little Champions (Ages 3-6): Focus on body awareness and “stranger danger” concepts.

Juniors (Ages 7-9): Focus on verbal assertiveness and basic control holds.

Teens (Ages 10-15): Focus on emotional regulation, peer pressure, and advanced neutralization techniques.
