Your First Class at Gracie Barra Agoura Jiu-Jitsu: A Step-by-Step Guide | Phone Number: +1 805-800-9681
Gracie Barra Agoura is designed to be a memorable, stress-free introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The academy has a specific protocol to ensure new students feel welcome and safe from the moment they walk in.
Here is a step-by-step guide to what you will experience on day one.
Step 1: Arrival & Check-In
Timing: Arrive 15 minutes early. This gives you time to find parking (easy in the shopping center), sign waivers, and get oriented.
The Greeting: You will be met by a staff member or program director at the front desk. They will show you around the facility (locker rooms, showers, water fountain) and introduce you to the “Red Shield” culture.
Step 2: Gearing Up
The Loaner Gi: You don’t need to buy anything yet. The academy provides a freshly cleaned Gracie Barra Gi (uniform) for your trial. Staff will help you find the right size and show you how to tie the belt.
Hygiene Check: Ensure your fingernails and toenails are trimmed short to avoid scratching training partners. Remove all jewelry (rings, earrings, watches) for safety.
- The Class Experience (GB1 Fundamentals)
Your first class will likely be part of the GB1 program, specifically designed for beginners.
The Bow-In: Class starts with all students lining up by belt rank. You will stand at the end of the line (White Belt). Everyone bows to the picture of Master Carlos Gracie Jr. and then to the instructor to show respect.
Warm-Up: 10-15 minutes of BJJ-specific movements like shrimping (hip escapes), bridging, and breakfalls. If you can’t do them perfectly, don’t worry—instructors will guide you.
Technique: The instructor (Professor Romulo, Jaeson, or Zane) will demonstrate a technique (e.g., escaping the mount). You will pair up with a partner to practice.
Drilling (No Sparring): As a first-day student, you will drill the move with a partner who offers zero resistance. You will not be thrown into live sparring. Safety is the priority.
- Post-Class
Bow-Out: The class ends with another formal line-up and bow. Students often shake hands with every partner in the room (“Good training”).
De-Brief: An instructor will check in with you to answer questions and discuss membership options if you enjoyed the class.
